Despite her rapid, but skirt-restricted, progress across the grounds, Lady Darriby-Jones arrived with the stragglers, understandable given that she had delayed to ensure her husband still breathed and had not been ridden down in a storm of dust and debris by a horse and rider moving at incredible speed.

“Make way, make way,” she cried as she slipped, slid, danced and darted her way through the cordon that, for a reason she still didn’t know, had gathered around the cesspit.

She saw Wilson. He was gesturing frantically in the direction of the cesspit and, as Lady Darriby-Jones made her inelegant but determined way to the front, she could see more clearly what was going on.

First, the cesspit cover was off. Well, that didn’t break the bounds of normalness. She knew that Wilson did a twice-a-year inspection of the entire waste system that existed in all its glorious splendour at Darriby Hall.

“It’s the way it’s grown up over the years, milady. Wants rebuilding from the ground up, it does.” She could hear his voice now, making a report to her following his regular report. He came to her with all his reports and review points, knowing that there was no point going to Darriby.

She heard her reply on each occasion that they must get around to doing something to the sewerage system and she would call in the experts before he reported again. That cycle had been going on since Wilson had first established himself as a highly capable man to have around the estate.

This, however, had nothing to do with the weird and wonderful home-grown system they had for disposal at Darriby Hall. This had everything to do with the fact that the sewerage in the cesspit moved, thrashing about and shouting for help as it spluttered over the edge and spread the evil-looking liquid on the cobbles all around.

The sewerage contained a body and that body, whatever the intention, was still very much alive.
